The Indian Army on Friday rescued around 1500 to 1700 tourists who were stranded on the Jawaharlal Nehru road in Sikkim after a heavy snowfall.
Tourists including women, children and elderly persons were evacuated by the Army despite poor visibility and inclement weather in the state.
They were returning from Nathu La Pass – Tsomgo Lake when their vehicles got stranded midway at several points along the stretch of the road. The stranded tourists were accommodated at an Army Camp in 17th Mile and were provided relief materials, including food, warm clothes and medicines to ensure proper safety.
The evacuation process will continue until all the stranded tourists are safely evacuated to state capital Gangtok.
Meanwhile, JCBs and Dozers were put into action to clear the snow off the road and restore road connectivity at the earliest.
