Lok Sabha Polls- Assam: 47 in fray from 4 seats, over 81 lakh voters to seal their fate

High decibel campaign by the political parties is underway to woo the voters.
4 seats are going to Lok Sabha polls in Assam in the third phase on May 7 where over 81 lakh voters will seal the fate of at least 47 candidates in the fray.
12 candidates are contesting in Kokrajhar, 14 in Barpeta, 13 in Dhubri and 8 candidates in Guwahati.
The total number of voters are- 81,77,207 including service voters- 28,116.
Out of these the total male voters are- 41,27,099, whereas the number of female voters are 40,84,130. There are a total of 112 third gender voters.
Polling will be held in 9516 polling stations.

Both, NDA (BJP, AGP and UPPL) and the Congress have fielded candidates in all the four seats. In the prestigious Guwahati seat, the BJP and Congress have fielded women candidates and also newcomers. Bijuli Kalita Medhi is contesting on a BJP ticket from Guwahati, the Congress has fielded Mira Barthakur Goswami.
BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad is contesting from the Barpeta (candidate- Phani Bhushan Choudhury) and Dhubri (candidate- Javed Islam) seats while UPPL has fielded Joyanta Basumatary from the Kokrajhar seat.
Some of the other prominent names in the fray includes- AIUDF Chief and incumbent Dhubri LS MP Badruddin Ajmal, who will be defending his seat against former Assam cabinet minister and 5-time MLA Rockybul Hussain of the Congress.
In the Bongaigon seat, it is expected to be a triangular fight between NDA consensus candidate Phani Bhushan Choudhury of the AGP, Deep Bayan of the Congress and Manoranjan Talukdar of the CPI-M (Marxist).

A total of 126 nominations were received in the 4 parliamentary seats, out of which only 52 were found to be valid. However, 5 candidates withdrew their nominations reducing the total number of contesting candidates to 47.
