Nagaland is staring at a fuel crisis. After the 48-hours ultimatum served to the State Government by four associations of petroleum transporters and retailers expired, the associations have called for an indefinite state-wide strike from Sunday midnight.
Four associations – Kohima Petrol Pump Dealers Association, Dimapur Petrol Pump Dealers Association, Nagaland Tanker Transport Association and Oil Tanker Drivers Union, Dimapur, had served an ultimatum to the State Government for safe rescue of oil tanker driver Tula Ram Buragohain and his helper Adman Surin that took effect from April 27 midnight.
In the ultimatum, the presidents of the associations had warned that failure to trace and rescue the drivers within the set deadline will compel them to impose indefinite closure of fuel stations in the state besides going ahead with a Chakka Bandh to halt transportation of petroleum products into the state.
With police yet to make any breakthrough in the abduction case, fuel stations in the state capital – Kohima are nearly running dry. As most of the fuel stations in Kohima are running dry, commuters are the worst affected. A number of taxis in the capital city have shut their engines down owing to fuel scarcity.
