The claims of corruption free governance in Assam have come under question after a person alleged that he was declared a Foreigner and sent to a detention camp after he failed to bribe the concerned authorities.
According to Amir Hussain, a judge at the No. 3 Foreigners Tribunal had sought for a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to complete the formalities and de clare Hussain as an Indian citizen. However, Hussain could only pay Rs 1.10 lakh and was identified as a foreigner on August 28, 2018.
The Foreigners Tribunal also allegedly refused to accept the evidences and documents as provided by the village headman. However, the Gauhati High Court declared Amir Hussain as an Indian citizen on March 7 and was released from the detention centre.
Meanwhile, this incident has raised apprehensions that it is only mere cash that decides on whether a person is an Indian citizen or a foreigner.
