The dissidence in the Manipur BJP, against Chief Minister Biren Singh’s leadership has now reached party working president JP Nadda’s door.
BJP national general secretary, Bhupender Yadav has been meeting party legislators from Manipur in the past few days and is now believed to have placed the issue before Nadda for a possible resolution.
Biren Singh’s fellow BJP legislators are said to be lobbying hard for a change in leadership. As many as 17 of the state’s 21 BJP legislators have sided with Thongam Biswajit Singh, a minister in the Biren Singh govt.
According to sources, Thongam Biswajit Singh, who was recently stripped off his power & PWD portfolio has been spear heading the dissidence against Biren Singh. Interestingly, the news that is doing the rounds is that another minister is in the race, that is Radheshyam Singh, the education minister.

Dissidence against Biren singh has been growing for quite some time now but it peaked when the chief minister decided to strip NPP leader and deputy chief minister N Joykumar Singh of the finance portfolio. It was during this purge that Biren Singh’s party colleague Biswajit Singh also lost some of the key portfolios that he was holding.
According to reliable sources, Bhupender Yadav summoned 9 legislators to New Delhi to discuss the growing dissent within Manipur BJP. This apparently included CM Biren Singh and Biswajit Singh.
A section of BJP central leadership are reportedly unhappy with the manner in which Biren Singh stripped his deputy and NPP leader Joykumar Singh of his finance portfolio without consulting the party high command.
Despite winning only 21 seats in the 60-seated state legislative Assembly, BJP engineered an alliance and succeeded in coming to power on 15 March, 2017, beating the single largest party, Congress, which won 28 seats.
The BJP-led government was formed with the support of four MLAs each from NPP and NPF, one each from Congress, LJP, Trinamool and an independent. Later the coalition formation was further strengthened when eight Congress MLAs defected to the BJP.
Earlier, the NPF legislators had also levelled charges against the BJP in Manipur of not treating them well and the NPF had gone to the extent of threatening to pull out. The political situation in Manipur is extremely volatile, to say the least.
