Manipur: JAC Calls 24-Hour Statewide Strike Over Custodial Death of Khoisnam Sanajaoba

Earlier, the JAC organised a sit in protest and also had submitted a memorandum to the Governor.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the custodial death of Khoisnam Sanajaoba has announced a 24-hour statewide strike from midnight of April 24 to midnight of April 25.

JAC took the step as there was no response from Governor Ajay Bhalla and the Government despite the memorandum that was handed over to the Governor on April 17 with the ultimatum of 5 days.
JAC has sought support from the public, the Meira Paibis and Civil Society Organisations to support the general strike.

As per the notification issued by the JAC, Sanajaoba, a village volunteer, was reportedly arrested by Imphal East Commando on March 31 and later died in custody on April 13.

Earlier, the JAC organised a sit in protest and also had submitted a memorandum to the Governor.

The JAC has also demanded that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure impartiality and transparency.

Meanwhile, as per Manipur Police sources, Sanajaoba was in judicial custody and had been admitted to JNIMS Hospital, Porompat, due to a pre-existing medical condition. Despite treatment efforts, he passed away on 13 April at the hospital’s casualty unit.

It needs to be mentioned that, Sanajaoba was arrested on March 31 along with four others for alleged links with the underground outfit KCP Noyon (MLF). He was remanded to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, on April 10. Just three days later, his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalisation and subsequent death.
