Governor Bhalla made these remarks while attending the Khongjom Day observation held at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal district.
Reflecting on the current situation in the state, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla said that significant efforts have been made in recent months to restore normalcy and ensure that Manipur moves forward on the path of peace, stability, and inclusive development. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives focused on improving the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in various relief camps. He stated under the Ministry of Tourism’s ‘Hunar Se Rojgar’ initiative, steps have been taken to create employment opportunities for the youth, particularly for those affected by displacement.
Governor Bhalla made these remarks while attending the Khongjom Day observation held at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Thoubal district. The Governor led the people in paying tribute to the departed heroes of the Khongjom War of 1891 by laying a wreath at the war memorial atop Kheba Hill.
The Governor also paid homage to freedom fighter Paona Brajabashi by laying a wreath at his statue located at Kheba Foothill, followed by a ceremonial Gun Salute. He offered Tarpon at the Khongjom River and also paid homage through Sankirtan, a traditional devotional performance.
While addressing the gathering, Governor Bhalla said that Khongjom Day is a tribute to the brave sons of Manipur who sacrificed their lives during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. He said that despite facing overwhelming odds, the warriors of Manipur fought valiantly against the British Empire to protect their homeland. “The Battle of Khongjom was not merely a battle of arms but a battle of honour, patriotism, and self-determination. The indomitable spirit of the Manipuri people is a rare example of patriotism in world history,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of strengthening the education sector, the Governor stated that it is crucial for the youth to understand their history and also gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s fast-changing world. He mentioned the recent inauguration of Information Technology Centres in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Senapati districts, funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs, as a major step toward empowering students with digital tools.
He also announced that the state has launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to raise awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse, in line with the Government of India’s mission to create a drug-free nation.
In another major development, the Governor revealed that Manipur has received a record allocation under the MGNREGA scheme for the financial year 2025–26, marking the highest-ever sanctioned amount for the state under this rural employment programme.
Governor Bhalla urged the youth to contribute to building a better Manipur by upholding the ideals of justice, equality, and brotherhood. He called on all citizens to honour the sacrifices made at the Battle of Khongjom by working together to build a brighter, strong and united Manipur.
Former Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh, Lok Sabha MP Bimol Akoijam, MLAs, Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, DGP Rajiv Singh, and other senior civil and police officers attended the observation.
