Manipur: ST status to Meiteis; STDCM stir intensifies

Manipur health minister Sapam Ranjan Singh fully backed the demand of STDCM and termed it as genuine one. Will Meiteis be granted ST Status?

The clamour for ST status to Meiteis is getting louder with every passing day.

The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur has intensified the agitation in support of it’s demand to grant ST status to the Meiteis.

STDCM members along with representatives of other Meitei groups today assembled at the residence of Manipur health minister Sapam Ranjan Singh at Konthoujam and handed over a memorandum in support of their demands.

Meanwhile, Manipur health minister Sapam Ranjan Singh fully backed the demand of STDCM and termed it as genuine one.

In fact, Sapam Ranjan Singh also assured of all possible support and initiatives from his side so that the demand of the STDCM materializes.

However, the Manipur health minister emphasized on the fact that there is a need for serious deliberations since the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) has opposed the demand of granting ST status to Meiteis. According to Singh, the matter needs to be resolved amicably.

Meanwhile, STDCM general secretary K. Bhogendrajit also appealed to ATSUM to reconsider its stand of opposing the demand for granting ST status to Meiteis.

Earlier, on October 13, the STDCM in a 1-day Public Convention had adopted certain resolutions that included- continuing with the sit-in protests; to storm residences of ministers, MP, MLAs for submit memorandums; to launch Meira Rally in addition to sit-in demonstrations; to impose shutdowns, as well as general strikes based on time and situation.
