Assam: Rhino poacher shot dead in an encounter in Chirang

In a significant breakthrough against wildlife crime, a dreaded poacher identified as Noveshwar Basumatary was shot dead in a major encounter near the Indo-Bhutan border in Chirang

According to sources, the poacher allegedly killed a rhino at the Manas National Park following which the police and forest officials launched an operation and managed to nab him on Saturday.

It was when the poacher tried to flee last night that the police opened fire on him, ultimately leading to his death.

Several items including rhino nails, skin, guns, and ammunition have been recovered from his possession by the forest department.

The deceased poacher was reportedly involved in the killing of as many as 40 elephants and two rhinos.
