Mizoram Man Jailed After Shocking Footage of Assaulting Girlfriend Goes Viral

A shocking CCTV video showing a man brutally assaulting a woman on a deserted road in Aizawl, Mizoram, has gone viral on social media. The video, which surfaced late Sunday evening, led to a public outcry and subsequent police action.

The accused, identified as 22-year-old C. Lalnunfela, surrendered himself at Kulikawn Police Station on Monday night after the video gained traction online. Police registered a suo motu case against him, and he was produced before the court on Tuesday. He has since been remanded to Central Jail, Aizawl.

According to Lalnunfela’s statement to the police, the woman in the footage is his girlfriend, with whom he had been in a relationship for over a year. The couple had visited a friend in Falkawn on Sunday, where they both consumed alcohol. Lalnunfela claimed that his girlfriend became heavily intoxicated, refused to return home, and even struck him during an argument.

He further admitted to leaving her temporarily at a deserted location, later identified as World Bank Road, where the assault occurred. Upon returning to pick her up, he attacked her in a fit of rage, as captured by the CCTV camera. After realizing the footage had gone viral, the couple reportedly left the scene. Lalnunfela claimed they reconciled later that evening and even had dinner together.

Lalnunfela, a resident of Chanmari West in Aizawl, was charged under Section 74 of the BNS Act, 2024, which prescribes a jail term of one to five years for such offenses. Police have confirmed that he has no prior history of violence.
