Over 2000 foreigners entered Mizoram between June and December 2024, Chief Minister Lalduhoma revealed during the Question Hour in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly. However, despite this significant influx, Mizoram recorded very few foreign tourists, CM Lalduhoma said.
The Chief Minister noted that this trend suggests Mizoram is being primarily used as a transit route by foreigners traveling to Myanmar.
Over 2000 Foreigners Entered: He stated that this situation has prompted the central government to consider reimposing the Protected Area Permit (PAP) to regulate foreign movement more effectively. The central government had earlier imposed the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Mizoram-Myanmar border, allowing unrestricted movement of people across the border.
Despite Mizoram’s strong opposition to the policy, Lalduhoma acknowledged that FMR has certain advantages.
The Chief Minister stressed that while the people on both sides of the border share deep cultural ties, the unrestricted movement of individuals has also led to serious challenges. He pointed out that the free movement of people has contributed to a rise in drug and arms smuggling, which has become a major concern for the state’s security.
