LS Polls 2024: BJP’s ally in Assam, AGP declares names of candidates for Barpeta, Dhubri seats

First Published: 11th March, 2024 19:30 IST

The AGP leadership is confident that the party will win the Barpeta seat as well as the Dhubri parliamentary seat represented by AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the BJP’s main alliance partner in Assam, has released it’s candidates’ list for the Lok Sabha elections.

Veteran Assam politician and 8-time Bongaigaon MLA, Phani Bhushan Choudhury will be in fray from the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. Choudhury won the Bongaigaon Assembly seat for the first time in 1985 as an Independent. Since 1991, he has been winning the seat as an AGP candidate. He won the seat in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2021.

In Dhubri, it will be a repeat of 2019 Lok Sabha polls. AGP has again fielded Zabed Islam against incumbent Dhubri Lok Sabha MP and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
Islam is a former MLA. He had won the 2011 Assam Assembly elections from Mankachar and he was fielded from Dhubri in the 2019 Lok Sabha Polls against Ajmal.
Ajmal has been winning the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat thrice – 2009, 2014 and 2019.

The names of the candidates were announced by former Union Minister and a top AGP leader Birendra Prasad Baishya.
Northeast Live spoke to Phani Bhushan Chowdhury after his name was announced as the Lok Sabha candidate from the Barpeta parliamentary seat.

He said, “Party leadership wants that I should contest from the Barpeta LS seat, since they believe that I can win from the seat. My party leadership believes that only if I contest from the Barpeta LS seat I can win. So I have accepted their (AGP leadership) request.”

Zabed Islam said, “People are supporting AGP this time. People have lost confidence on Badruddin Ajmal. I think Congress now has no relevance among the people. Due to anti-incumbency against Ajmal, vote share will shift towards us by more than 80 percent.”

BJP has already announced the list of its candidates for the 11 of the 14 LS seats in Assam. BJP’s other ally UPPL has fielded Raju Kumar Narzary as its candidate from the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.
