Over 150 pigs have died of African swine fever in Assam’s Sivasagar district as the disease has gripped the region.

Reportedly, carcasses of piglets and also the infected piglets were transported from Panbecha, Banmukh, Betbari, Meteka and Hansara in Sivsagar.

The situation has deteriorated in certain areas of the district’s Sivasagar revenue circle, according to the district animal husbandry.

According to the District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Akshay Keshari Bhatta, the worst affected villages in the district are Dehing Kalghar and Jalukonibari.

Meanwhile, the district animal husbandry department has informed that emergency measures are being implemented.

In order to prevent further spread, the department has also strongly advised the culling of infected pigs. In addition, the Sivasagar district administration issued prohibitory orders prohibiting the sale, stocking, and movement of pigs in the Sivasagar revenue circle and Sivasagar town.

The department, on the other hand, lamented that the villagers disposed of their dead pigs in the Dorika River rather than following the scientific process, which poses the risk of the disease becoming an epidemic.

Meanwhile, residents have blamed the situation on the Veterinary Department’s lack of proactive measures. It should be noted that this is the third time the district has been hit by African Swine Fever.
