Police have arrested a man accused of throwing acid on five stray dogs in Baksa’s Jhakhalipothar area, one of which died on the spot.

The accused, 43-year-old Gautam Basak, was arrested after a local NGO involved in animal welfare lodged a complaint against the person demanding his immediate arrest.

The horrific incident took place on December 17 and came to light after a youth named Nirmal Das informed the NGO about the incident.

While one of the dogs died on the spot, the others were rushed to a veterinary hospital in Guwahati where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered under the ‘prevention of cruelty to animals’ act 1960 and the accused has been sent to judicial custody.
