Veteran army man Mohammad Sanaullah walked out of the Goalpara district jail on Saturday. Following his release, Sanaullah was brought to the Kamrup (Rural) SP office in Amingaon for collection of bio-metrics.

The ex-honorary captain’s arrest had triggered a massive row putting the entire exercise of identifying illegal migrants under question. Sanaullah’s release comes following Friday’s high court directive to set him free on bail.

Top Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist appeared before the Gauhati High Court for Sanaullah. The ex-army man’s lawyers submitted all the relevant documents to substantiate that Sanaullah is an Indian citizen.

Things went wrong, after Chandramal Das, an investigating official of the Border police termed Sanaullah as a foreigner ultimately leading to his detention.

However, Chandramal Das now maintains that the Sanaullah he had investigated a decade ago was a different man with the same name. To make matters worse, Sanaullah was labelled as a foreigner when he was on a special operation in Manipur.
