Allies UPPL-AGP-BJP selects UPPL MLA Joyanta Basumatary for Kokrajhar LS seat

According to sources, Basumatary has been selected by the steering committee and his candidacy will be formally announced today.

The Assam NDA partners – UPPL, BJP and AGP on Wednesday has selected UPPL’s Sidli MLA Joyanta Basumatary as the NDA candidate for the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.

 According to sources, Basumatary has been selected by the steering committee and his candidacy will be formally announced today.  Earlier on Monday, UPPL, BJP and AGP had formed a Steering committee to finalize the NDA candidate for the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency.

The BJP will contest 11 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in Assam, leaving two for its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and one for its other ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

AGP on Monday announced that Phani Bhusan Choudhury will contest from Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency and Zabed Islam for the Dhubri constituency.

 In 2019, BJP had fielded 10 candidates and won 9 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state.  Ukhrao Gwra Brahma was the UPPL candidate in Kokrajhar. Naba Sarania, Independent won the seat. While BPF’s Pramila Rani Brahma getting second and Ukhrao Gwra Brahma finishing at third.

BJP Rupak Sharma lost the Nowgong seat to Congress’ Pradyut Bordoloi and in Kaliabor it was AGP candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta who lost to Congress’ Gaurav Gogoi.

In Barpeta AGP candidate was Dipak Das. He lost to Abdul Khaleq of Congress.

In Dhubri, AGP’s Zabed Islam lost to AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal who won the seat for the third time. AGP’s Zabed Islam finished third, Congress’s Abu Taher Bepari was second.
