CCTV footage has emerged showing the two young men, wrestlers, punching and beating the old man till he collapsed on the road
A vicious incident of road rage has been reported from the heart of Kohima city in Nagaland.
A 57-year old man who was driving with his son was brutally punched and beaten up in front of his son by two young men, wrestlers, till the old man identified as K Lawrence Miasalhou collapsed on the road. The incident was captured on CCTV.
Miasalhou was rushed to the hospital but was declared brought dead. He was working as the PA to Kohima DC.
It was on the fateful day of May 18, when the father and son were attacked by the two young men apparently for honking at them. As per the CCTV footage the car of the accused was moving ahead of the victim’s vehicle. It stopped at a busy point in the Phool Bari area on the left side of the road. Soon, the vehicle in which the Miasalhou was travelling also stopped. What appears from the visuals is that K Lawrence Miasalhou, too stopped his vehicle in an apparent bid to lodge a protest.
But soon both the accused – Neizosetuo Kire (24) and Khrietsonyü Whuorie (25) were seen coming out of their car and punching Miasalhou and his son Thejavizo B Miasalhou. One of the accused was seen punching Miasalhou multiple time after which he collapsed on the road. One of the accused tried to bring the situation under control, but the other one was seen continuing his assault on Miasalhou’s son.
The accused have been arrested and an investigation is ongoing. A criminal case has been registered U/S 323/325/352/302 IPC in North Police Station.
Several Organisations, including the Nagaland Wrestling Association have called for swift justice under appropriate sections of law and for exemplary punishment.
The Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) held a public rally on Monday to show resentment against the murder of Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou.
WAYO condemned the incident and said, “As per Naga tradition, it is the duty of the elders to reprimand and correct young people for their misdemeanour. However, it is unfathomable and barbaric for young people to react with brute force to the extent of taking an elder’s life.”
In a memorandum to the Kohima DC seeking stern action against the perpetrators, the WAYO demanded, “No bail should be given to them under any circumstances. WAYO also warns that if any person or group tries to bail them out, they will be held responsible for any untoward consequences.”
The Nagaland Wrestling Association too has condemned the incident and said, “Today the wrestling fraternity is aggrieved and we unequivocally condemn such act of barbarism and ruthlessness which has no place in our modern-day world and should be condemned by one and all. At the same time, the Association also requests and appeals the law enforcement agency, under the state government to initiate and deliver appropriate justice early.”
The Southern Angami Youth Organization, Northern Angami Youth Organization, Chakhroma Youth Organization, Mezomia Mechü Kehou (MMK) and Angami Youth Organization have also expressed grief and condemned the incident in the strongest terms.
After the incident, K Lawrence Miasalhou was taken to the Oking Hospital, Kohima but succumbed to his injuries at around 3 a.m. the next day.
