The tripartite talks on the Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) issue began on December 13 in New Delhi. The talks follow the Nagaland government’s submission of its comments on the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for the proposed creation of FNT.
The 10-member delegation from the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), led by its president A. Chingmak Chang, represented the aspirations of the region’s people. On behalf of the central government, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, and Advisor (NE) A.K. Mishra were present. Representing the Nagaland government, Chief Secretary J. Alam participated alongside Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner and the Home Commissioner.
The meeting holds particular significance, as the Nagaland government recently forwarded its detailed observations and recommendations on the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) to the Centre. These inputs are seen as crucial to advancing the negotiations.
The ongoing talks were preceded by a key meeting on November 21, where Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his two deputies met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. During this meeting, Shah assured that the ENPO would be invited for discussions after the conclusion of the Hornbill Festival.
