If the accused fail to substantiate their allegations, they could face legal punishment under criminal law

Meghalaya Assembly Deputy Speaker Timothy D. Shira has filed a massive 100 crore defamation suit against Assam-based social media influencer Mikkanchi R. Sangma and a Garo Hills YouTuber Balsrang Marak, accusing them of spreading misinformation.

But what exactly did they say that led to such a staggering lawsuit?

The case, filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Shillong on Wednesday, accuses Mikkanchi R. Sangma and Balsrang Marak of criminal and civil defamation for allegedly distorting his statement made in the Assembly, in which they claimed he was against his own community and opposed the proposal to make Tura a Winter Capital.

After filing the case, Timothy D. Shira said, “I have filed criminal defamation cases against the two. They did not understand what I said in the Assembly and without knowing the details they both have made my speech go viral on YouTube, misrepresenting my words regarding Tura as the winter capital. They said I am totally against my community and making Tura Winter Capital. They also condemn me for not cooperating with the community.”

Shira’s legal counsel Sujit Dey said, “ They have wrongly misinterpreted what my client has spoken in the Assembly. Mikkanchi R. Sangma who is from Assam has nothing to do with Meghalaya. But she still misinterpreted my client’s speech which has defamed him in his constituency and the entire state.”

Sujit Dey said that if the accused fail to substantiate their allegations, they could face legal punishment under criminal law. Additionally, a Rs 100 crore defamation suit has been filed against each of them for allegedly misinterpreting the Deputy Speaker’s statement in the Assembly, leading to damage to his reputation.

Mikkanchi R. Sangma hails from Darangiri, Goalpara district of Assam and Balsrang Marak is a resident of Thapa Darenchi, North Garo Hills.

With legal proceedings now underway, the accused influencers have yet to respond.
