Shillong Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Parking Amid Rising Traffic Woes

First Published: 2nd March, 2025 14:30 IST

CEO said that regular checks would be conducted to ensure compliance with parking contracts and prevent any breaches.

With random roadside parking worsening traffic congestion in Shillong, Shillong Cantonment Board CEO Ayush Maurya has assured strict action against unauthorised parking in the Cantonment area and designated parking zones.

Maurya warned that penalties would be imposed on violators, particularly those charging more than the prescribed amount or parking in unauthorized locations. He said that regular checks would be conducted to ensure compliance with parking contracts and prevent any breaches.

While the state government is working on long-term traffic solutions, Maurya clarified that there is currently no proposal for new parking spaces within the Cantonment area. He stressed that multiple stakeholders must be consulted before granting land for parking and warned that any breach of contract would result in fines.

“As of now, there is no such proposal. If and when a proposal comes from the government or relevant authorities, we will take it into consideration. Before allocating land, all stakeholders will need to be consulted,” Maurya stated.
