Manipur: First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered the state illegally deported
First Published: 8th March, 2024 19:23 IST
As per inputs, at least 77 Myanmar nationals were airlifted from the Imphal International Airport
In a significant development to ensure that the identity and rights of the indigenous in Manipur are safeguarded, the Manipur Government has deported the first batch of Myanmar nationals who had entered the state illegally.
In a post on X, Manipur CM N Biren Singh wrote, “First batch of Myanmar nationals who entered India illegally deported today.
Although India is not signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it has given shelter & aid to those fleeing the crisis in Myanmar on humanitarian grounds with a systematic approach.”
The deportation of illegal immigrants from Myanmar comes within weeks of the Centre’s decision to suspend the Indo-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR) and fence the entire 1,643-km stretch of its border with Myanmar. The FMR allowed tribal people living along the border to travel 16 km into each other’s countries.
