Assam: Rhino carcass found in Manas National Park; probe underway

First Published: 19th August, 2023 18:39 IST

The horn was found severed but has been recovered by the Park authorities

2 rhino deaths within a span of 13 days in Assam has raised concern among wildlife enthusiasts regarding the safety of the pachyderms.

A rhino carcass was recovered from the Bhuyanpara range of the Manas National Park, an UNESCO World Heritage site.

Soon after receiving information Field Director of the Park, Vaibhav C Mathur rushed to the spot and recovered the horn which was already severed but was found near the carcass.

Although the exact reason as to what led to the death of the rhino is yet to be ascertained, the poaching angle cannot be ruled out considering the circumstances under which the carcass was found.

However, no official statement has been made so far.

Further probe into the matter is underway. The rhino was brought to the Manas National Park from the Kaziranga National Park in 2009.

On August 7, a female rhino was found dead in the Kohora range of the Kaziranga National Park. But later the Park authorities informed that it was not a case of poaching and the rhino had reportedly died due to old age.
