A total of 325 inner line permit (ILP) defaulters were detected during a verification drive carried out in and around Kohima town and a fine of Rs 1. 2 lakh was imposed, informed Deputy Commissioner Kohima Shanavas C.
The day-long ILP verification drive was conducted by five teams from district administration and police in and around Kohima town on May 16, 2023, to detect illegal immigrants and ILP defaulters.
During the drive, the above cases of ILP with expiry dates and some without valid passes were detected and after verification of all required documents, a total amount of Rs 1,20,000 was realised as a penalty. The collected amount would be deposited as government revenue.
The penalty amount was charged as per the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations Act 1873 and some of the cases were referred to the police and magistrate also pass and order, said DC Shanavas.
Mentioning that the drive is a special exercise and the district task force is also conducting checking in Zubza, the entry point to the district, Shanavas said that regular checking cannot be conducted however, the surprise checkings will be increased in frequency and regular checkings in Zubza will be streamlined along with the police so, that more defaulters and illegal immigrants can be detected.
He hoped that this will help people to finally apply and get the ILP as per the requirements
Shanavas also maintained that the verification drive is not against any particular community or particular section of people but is being done as per the law.
“You are welcome to come to Kohima but get these documents and whatever is necessary as per the rules and regulations, then enter your state this is our policy so that’s why we are conducting surprise checking,” he added.
Furthermore, Shanavas also encouraged the local contractors who are engaging a lot of labourers for construction works and others to be aware and get the ILP for these people who are working as labourers without any delay. He said that it has been observed that many people do not help these labourers to get the ILP and they just carry on with their work.
