Nagaland Health Dept Launches Crackdown on Illegal Drug Sales and Unlicensed Pharmacies in Dimapur and Chumukedima

If anyone found selling the banned drugs, the licence will be cancelled.

In a major crackdown to curb the sale of banned drugs and enforce compliance with pharmacy regulations, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland today launched a rigorous inspection drive across Dimapur and Chumukedima and warned of strict actions for non-compliance.

This drive is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and ensure that pharmacies operate in a transparent and accountable manner.

Addressing a press conference at District Hospital Dimapur, Health Minister P. Paiwang Konyak informed the public that illegal drugs, which have been banned by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), are still circulating in the market.

He urged all pharmacy owners to ensure they are not selling any prohibited drugs and to verify the status of their licenses, ensuring they are up-to-date.

If anyone found selling the banned drugs, the licence will be cancelled, said the Minister.

The department is also checking pharmacies operated by unauthorized or unqualified persons.

It may be noted that the department had previously given ample time for pharmacies to employ qualified pharmacists, but many have failed to comply. As a result, strict action will now be taken against such establishments.

The Minister emphasized that those running pharmacies without valid license will be issued show cause notice to renew the license and if the pharmacist fails to comply, their license will be cancelled.

The Minister said all such discrepancies will be looked into stating that the exercise is ongoing and will continue even in the days to come.

Earlier, the department have suspended 49 licenses.

Furthermore, pharmacists are urged to ensure that their businesses comply with all legal requirements to avoid penalties.
