On December 21, 2022, CM Sarma announced in the Assam assembly that the state had acquired 1,800 acres of land from Mizoram
Mizoram home minister, Lalchamliana, on Monday informed the Mizoram Assembly that the state did not lose land to Assam but rather gained some areas that were regarded as its territory by the neighbouring state.
In a written reply to questions from Congress legislature party leader Zodintluanga Ralte and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) member Vanlalhlana, the home minister said that Mizoram not only did not any land to Assam, it instead gained some land that were included in the Notification No. 2106 A.P. dated March 9th, 1933 and regarded as being within Assam by the neighbouring state.
Lalchamliana said there are no reports of people living in the Mizoram-Assam border areas having problems harvesting their agriculture and forest produce along the interstate border.
Earlier, during a debate on Lalchamliana’s demands, opposition members accused the state government of remaining silent when Assam chief minister Himanta BiswaSarma claimed that Assam had acquired Mizoram lands.
On December 21, 2022, CM Sarma announced in the Assam assembly that the state had acquired 1,800 acres of land from Mizoram.
The interstate border dispute between the two neighbouring states continued to simmer even as the two states claimed to be making efforts to solve the border imbroglio through negotiations.
The border dispute reached its peak in July 2021, when police from both states exchanged gunfire, killing five Assam Police officers.
Following the incident, negotiations to find an amicable and long-lasting solution to the border dispute continued in earnest, and several talks, including at the chief ministerial and ministerial levels, have been undertaken.
