This pioneering step is set to not only benefit Mizoram but also pave the way for similar initiatives across the Northeastern region.

Mizoram is all set to establish the Northeast’s first-ever Pharmacy Skill Development Centre, marking a significant step toward strengthening healthcare and pharmaceutical education in the region.

Dr. Montukumar M. Patel, President of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), made the announcement during his visit to Mizoram today. In a meeting with State Health Minister Lalrinpuii, he confirmed PCI’s willingness to set up the centre, provided the state government allots appropriate land. The proposed location for the facility has already been identified at Muallungthu, on the outskirts of Aizawl.

Dr. Patel underlined the urgent need for such a centre, citing a severe shortage of pharmacists in the state. Of the 122 sanctioned posts for pharmacists across Mizoram, only 25 are currently filled, leaving 97 vacancies. “There is no proper system in place, and the shortage is putting tremendous pressure on hospital staff,” Dr. Patel stated, urging the state government to expedite the recruitment process.

He also said the importance of strengthening drug regulation in Mizoram, where drug abuse continues to pose a serious challenge. Of the 12 sanctioned posts for Drug Control Officers under the Food and Drug Administration, seven remain unfilled. Dr. Patel appealed to the government to fill these critical vacancies without delay to ensure effective monitoring and control.

Dr. Patel communicated all these concerns formally to both the Health Minister and the Governor of Mizoram, Lt. Gen. Dr. V.K. Singh (Retd.).

This pioneering step is set to not only benefit Mizoram but also pave the way for similar initiatives across the Northeastern region.
