NSCN-IM: Separate flag, constitution constituent parts of sovereignty

First Published: 17th December, 2022 11:47 IST

NSCN-IM said that the Framework Agreement says that the Government of India recognises the unique history and position of the Nagas

The NSCN-IM has once again reiterated that separate flag and constitution are constituent parts of sovereignty and there should be no ambiguity about it.

In a fresh statement released yesterday which is being seen as an interpretation of the historic Framework Agreement, the NSCN-IM said that the Framework Agreement says that the Government of India recognises the unique history and position of the Nagas.

The NSCN-IM claimed that by unique history, it means that the Nagas have the history of independence and that the Nagas have never been a part of the Union of India nor that of Burma or Myanmar.

The NSCN-IM statement also stated that the unique position in FA means that the position and situation of quote unquote Nagalim is political and not a law and order problem of India.

The NSCN-IM added that the Framework Agreement says that both sides have understood each others’ respective positions and are cognizant of the universal principle that in a democracy sovereignty lies with the people and that it is an acknowledged fact that the sovereignty of Nagalim lies with the Naga people.
The NSCN-IM further claimed that the Framework Agreement of 2015 was signed under the principle of shared-sovereignty.

The NSCN-IM added that Shared sovereignty means that the sovereign Indian people and the sovereign Naga people will share sovereign power in some areas as defined in the competencies.

The NSCN-IM added that the Government of India proposed for an enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful co-existence of the two entities. The NSCN-IM further said that by new relationship it meant a relationship based on the Framework agreement.

Significantly, the NSCN-IM stated that on the question of Naga National Flag and constitution, it is a common knowledge that flag and constitution are constituent parts of sovereignty and there should be no ambiguity about it. The NSCN-IM added that competencies are being worked out on the principle of the Framework Agreement.
