Assam Police busts fake death certificate racket, 9 arrested

According to police, many private insurance companies, ASHA workers, and village headmen are involved in the racket

Assam police busted a fake death certificate racket and arrested as many as nine people who were involved in the fraud case.

The arrests were made by the Assam Crime Branch on December 15, 2022, after it raided several locations in Guwahati, as well as Nalbari and Barpeta districts. In Guwahati, the raid was carried out at Paltan Bazar, Hatigaon area.

Sharing the modus operandi of the fraudsters, the Police said that first they gather information from the village heads if anyone has died, then they collect the deceased’s pan and Aadhar card details and replace it with a photo of a living person, open a bank account, and apply for insurance. They also pay the premiums for the first six months. And later saying the insured passed away produced fake death certificates and extorted money from them claiming for death benefits of the insured.

According to police, many private insurance companies, ASHA workers, and village headmen are involved in the racket.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
