North East’s 1st Para Sports Meet Kicks Off With Grand Opening Ceremony In Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium

The State winning the highest number of medals will also be awarded the Jadav Chandra Bhuyan Special trophy.
The first-ever North East Para Sports Meet 2024 took off to a grand start today in Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium. 575 para-athletes from six northeastern states are participating in the sporting extravaganza that will conclude on November 29.
Inaugurating the sporting event, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, CMD of Pride East Entertainments Private Limited and Organising President North East Para Sports Meet, “It is a big day for entire Northeastern region and it is actually a story of hope, success, smile and aspiration. Just hope to succeed as my idea was to hold this event as I was dreaming for a long time to take these specially-abled children forward, give them a platform by nourishing their talent by bridging the gap and taking them forward.”
Jayawant Gundu Hamanawar, Secretary General, Paralympic Committee of India said, “The initiative of Para Sports meet will help the growth of para sports among the eight northeastern states.”
Minister Pijush Hazarika stated, “This is a great initiative, I hope this event which is the first Para Sports meet of Northeast will continue for coming years also and hope to cross the boundary of Northeast. As dealing with specially-abled people is tough, it’s a great initiative by the organising committee.”
Organized by Udayachal, a unit of the Jadav Chandra Bhuyan Memorial Trust, in collaboration with the Paralympic Association of Assam and under the aegis of the Paralympic Committee of India, the three-day event aims to provide a platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their talents.
The competition, being held across three venues—Sarusajai Stadium, Vandya International School, and Udayachal—will see participants competing in five sporting disciplines: Para Athletics, Para-Badminton, Para Swimming, Para Table Tennis, and Para Boccia.
Athletes from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Sikkim are participating at the Meet.
Riniki Bhuyan Sharma emphasized the importance of the meet in providing a platform for regional para-athletes to shine and make an impact at the national level. Udayachal, which is a CSR initiative of Pride East Entertainments, is playing a pivotal role in hosting the event.
The ceremony was marked by vibrant performances, including traditional dances and cultural displays, highlighting the region’s rich heritage. A special dance performance was also done by the Para-athletes.

The North East Para Sports Meet 2024 is set to be a milestone in the region’s sporting calendar, providing para-athletes with an invaluable opportunity for recognition and growth.
Syed Zarir Hussain, Vice-President, Media, Pride East Group, Rajib Dey, Organizing Secretary of North East Para Sports Meet were also present at the inaugural event.
