Aizawl Municipal Council Mayor Lalrinenga Sailo saturday inaugurated a stall for the sale of compost produced by Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) from Aizawl city’s waste collection. The AMC Compost is made available at the newly inaugurated stall below the AMC Office.

The development came after AMC took over the Tuirial Waste Management Center from SIPMIU at the end of January.

Lalrinenga stated on the occasion, “Because there was no transfer of funds during the takeover, we are currently managing it with AMC funds. The lone Aizawl Waste Management Center can no longer handle the city’s ever-growing waste, and because the AMC is currently short on funds, it will require government assistance as it goes. We are just getting started, and many of our plans have yet to be realized. However, the conversion of recyclable waste into cash and compost being made available for purchase today makes me elated. ” He also commented that this was a development not only for AMC but for Mizoram as a whole.

AMC Solid Waste Management Executive Councilor Laltlanzova Khiangte also spoke on the occasion, saying, “We have often heard about municipalities in developed cities in India that have produced waste products.

The fact that AMC has been able to produce compost from waste after only half a year of operating the Waste Management Centre is a significant achievement for us.

Making compost from waste is a difficult task, and many municipalities in India have yet to do so. I am extremely proud of all of AMC’s employees and partners who helped make this product a reality.

Waste management is an issue that requires complete cooperation. It is my hope that we can collaborate with state authorities to avoid wasting our plastic items and one day pave our roads using plastic waste.” AMC has partnered with a firm called ‘Waste Tech & Bio Energy.’ Compost is available in 15 kg and 25 kg bags, with the product estimated at Rs10 per kg.
