A controversy has broken out in Manipur over the alleged custodial death of 27-year-old Khoisnam Sanajaoba. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed by locals of Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai has strongly condemned the incident and is demanding immediate action against the officials responsible.
As part of their protest, the JAC held a sit-in demonstration at Khurai Lamlong Market, pressing for justice and accountability. They submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Bhalla on Thursday, urging the authorities to register a case of murder against the concerned officials. The JAC has also demanded that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure impartiality and transparency.
Further, the JAC is calling for the public release of the post-mortem videography and report, expressing serious doubts about the circumstances of Sanajaoba’s death.
According to Manipur Police sources, Sanajaoba was in judicial custody and had been admitted to JNIMS Hospital, Porompat, due to a pre-existing medical condition. Despite treatment efforts, he passed away on 13 April at the hospital’s casualty unit.
It needs to be mentioned that, Sanajaoba was arrested on 31 March along with four others for alleged links with the underground outfit KCP Noyon (MLF). He was remanded to Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa, on 10 April. Just three days later, his condition worsened, leading to his hospitalisation and subsequent death.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with growing demands for justice, transparency, and accountability from the state authorities. The JAC vows to continue its movement until their demands are met and justice is delivered.
