Mizoram Holds Local and Village Council Elections, Uses Postal Ballots for the First Time

With postal ballots introduced for the first time, more people, including those on election duty, are able to participate

Elections for Local Councils and Village Councils are taking place across Mizoram today, from 7 AM. For the first time, postal ballots are being used in these elections.

Voters from different districts are casting their votes to elect new local representatives.

Elections are being held in 9 districts for Village Councils and in 2 districts for Local Councils. Thousands of candidates are competing for both general and reserved seats.
Village Council Elections – District-wise Seat Breakdown
Aizawl: 70 villages (244 general seats, 82 reserved seats)
Lunglei: 88 villages (250 general seats, 94 reserved seats)
Serchhip: 56 villages (188 general seats, 66 reserved seats)
Champhai: 62 villages (214 general seats, 76 reserved seats)
Mamit: 92 villages (310 general seats, 98 reserved seats)
Kolasib: 60 villages (288 general seats, 74 reserved seats)
Saitual: 46 villages (152 general seats, 46 reserved seats)
Khawzawl: 38 villages (111 general seats, 43 reserved seats)
Hnahthial: 32 villages (100 general seats, 34 reserved seats)

Local Council Elections – Aizawl and Lunglei
Aizawl: 87 Local Councils, 244,726 voters, 418 general seats, 157 reserved seats (Total: 575 seats)
Lunglei: 24 Local Councils, 41,206 voters, 110 general seats, 38 reserved seats (Total: 148 seats)

This election marks an important step in strengthening local governance in Mizoram. With postal ballots introduced for the first time, more people, including those on election duty, are able to participate in the voting process.
