Gauhati University (GU) will soon introduce technical courses focused on the semiconductor industry, aligning with the upcoming semiconductor plant in Jagiroad. Additionally, a dedicated study centre on climate change will be established within the university. This was revealed by GU Vice Chancellor (VC) Nani Gopal Mahanta in an exclusive conversation with Northeast Live.
Highlighting the collaboration, VC Mahanta stated, “Terry, which has been pivotal in areas like energy resources, plant biology, agro-farming, and climate change, will set up a joint centre at Gauhati University. It will be called the GU-Terry Centre on Himalayan Studies.”
In addition, GU will soon house an advanced centre in collaboration with NIELIT (National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology), spearheading the semiconductor university project. The upcoming centre at GU will feature sophisticated AI labs, IoT, cybersecurity, and machine learning facilities.
“This initiative will provide our students immediate access to cutting-edge skills that were previously unavailable in Assam,” Mahanta noted.
GU representatives have also engaged with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia. Both leaders have committed to visiting the university. Scindia is scheduled to arrive on 25 February, with expectations of making significant announcements.
Mahanta added that Pradhan has requested GU to host a mega Vice Chancellors’ conference, underscoring the university’s growing role in academic and technological advancements.
These initiatives mark a transformative phase for Gauhati University, positioning it as a hub for semiconductor education and climate research in the Northeast.
