NDA set to sweep Assam Panchayat Elections: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

The elections will be conducted in two phases on May 2 and May 7 across the state

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today expressed confidence that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and United Peoples’ Party Liberal (UPPL) in the state is all set to sweep the upcoming Panchayat elections in the state.

Taking to X, CM Sarma said that the NDA has already secured a significant lead by winning 37 Zila Parishad seats uncontested. BJP won in 35 sets and AGP won in 2. In addition, the alliance has also won 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats unopposed, BJP winning in 259 and AGP winning in 29.

Calling it a “massive and unprecedented mandate” in Assam’s political history, the Chief Minister thanked the people of Assam for their continued trust and support. He also praised party workers for their tireless efforts.

“Yesterday marked the last date for withdrawal of nominations for the upcoming Panchayat elections. As per reports received so far, the NDA has already secured 37 Zila Parishad (35 BJP and 2 AGP) and 288 Anchalik Panchayat (259 BJP and 29 AGP) seats unopposed. This is a massive and unprecedented mandate in Assam’s political history. It reflects the immense trust and overwhelming love that the people of Assam have for the NDA and for our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji. We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive. The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam. My heartfelt gratitude to the people of Assam and deep appreciation to our dedicated karyakartas for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment,” CM Sarma posted on X.

With the withdrawal of nominations completed on Thursday, the Assam State Election Commission has confirmed that a total of 7,173 applications were filed for the upcoming elections.

Of these, 6,613 applications were found valid. Following 378 withdrawals and 179 rejections, a total of 5,900 candidates remain in the fray.

Among the districts, Dhubri saw the highest number of nomination withdrawals (37), followed by Nagaon and Cachar (36 each), Kamrup (33), and Sribhumi (27). Dhubri also has the highest number of contesting candidates at 486.

The elections will be conducted in two phases on May 2 and May 7 across the state. The polls will be held in 27 districts, barring the 6th schedule districts, which do not fall under the Panchayati Raj system.

The three-tier Panchayat elections are being held to elect 21,920 Gram Panchayat members, 2,192 Anchalik Panchayat members, 2192 GP Presidents and GP Vice Presidents, 181 AP presidents, 181 AP vice presidents and 397 Zilla Parishad members.
