Events like these hold the promise of fostering greater recognition and appreciation for Manipuri art across the nation.
Art has always been a powerful medium for expressing emotions, and artists channel their creativity into their works to communicate with the world. The 30th Group Art Exhibition was inaugurated yesterday at the Guwahati Artists’ Guild exhibition hall, organised by the Manipur State Kala Akademi.

This event aims to showcase the rich artistry of Manipur to audiences beyond the state’s borders. The exhibition will remain open to the public until December 6.

A total of 29 artworks are on display, featuring 19 paintings, five graphic artworks, four sculptures, and one drawing. Among the highlights are works by renowned artists, including Th. Tombi, the first Lalit Kala Akademi Awardee from Manipur. Additionally, pieces from the State Kala Akademi’s awardee were also prominently displayed.

The event is not just a celebration of established talent but also a platform for young, energetic artists to present their works to art lovers outside Manipur. Students from the Imphal Art College have also contributed their creations to the exhibition, further enriching the variety of artwork on display.

Speaking to North East Live, Umananda, Deputy Secretary of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, highlighted the main purpose of the event. “This exhibition was organised to showcase the talent and progress of Manipuri artists to audiences outside the state. It will provide immense benefits to our artists. While exhibitions are frequently organized in Manipur, the art market there is limited. Through initiatives like this, we can connect Manipuri artists with potential buyers and art enthusiasts from across the country. This will not only promote their work but also encourage and sustain them economically,” he stated.
One of the participants, 24-year-old Oinam Roshni, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at the Imphal Art College, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to display her artwork outside Manipur for the first time. Having previously participated in local exhibitions, she believes this experience will help her gain more exposure and valuable feedback.

“I am extremely grateful to the organisers for giving us such a big platform. This exhibition is a tremendous opportunity for young artists like me to showcase our talent and grow,” she shared.
The opening event was graced by Sunanda Thokchom, Secretary of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, Yumnam Nabachandra Singh, former Principal of Manipur Art College, and retired IAS and cultural activist, Swapnanil Barua.
The exhibition has successfully drawn attention to the immense artistic talent emerging from Manipur, encouraging art lovers and collectors to explore and support these vibrant creations. Events like these hold the promise of fostering greater recognition and appreciation for Manipuri art across the nation.
