Ticket-for-Cash Scam Hits Assam Cong, Party Announces 3-Member Probe Panel to Investigate Internal Sabotage

The committee will also probe allegations of deliberate walkovers extended to opposition candidates & unexplained withdrawal of nominations.

Stung by a massive ticket-for-cash controversy just ahead of the crucial Assam Panchayat polls, the Congress has finally set up a 3-member Investigation Committee under the Chairmanship of Paban Singh Ghatowar, former Union Minister and a senior Assam Congress leader, to probe all allegations of corruption including those of internal sabotage leveled against party members.

The committee will also probe allegations of deliberate walkovers extended to opposition candidates and unexplained withdrawal of nominations.

“In light of serious allegations pertaining to corruption, internal sabotage, and misconduct during the recent Panchayat Elections, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) views these charges with the utmost gravity. Upholding our commitment to transparency, accountability, and internal discipline, the Party has resolved to ensure that those found guilty face exemplary consequences,” a Congress press statement signed by Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora announcing the probe committee said.

The other members of the committee are Former Union Minister R.P. Sarmah, Former Member of Parliament and Vice President of Assam Congress,
Bobbeeta Sharma.

The committee will submit its findings to president and general secretary of all india congress by May 7.

Bhupen Bora felt so lost and helpless that he accused Assam Police of acting on the behest of ruling BJP and using its power to threaten and stop Congress candidates from filing nominations as large number of party candidates either withdrew nominations or refused to file their papers.

The probe committee seems to have come a little too late as the BJP and its ally AGP have already won 325 seats unopposed and voting will take place on May 2 and 7th. The damage to the already beleaguered congress party has been done beyond repair as far as the panchayat polls are concerned.
Plagued with in-fightings and bitter rivalries among the leaders, there seems to very little hope of a revival of the old but no longer grand party.
