Assam-Mizoram Border Talks: Both Sides Reaffirm to Find Amicable Solution, To Use Soft Power of Culture and Sports to Further Deepen Ties

The next ministerial level meeting will be held before March 31 next year

Assam and Mizoram have re-affirmed to find an amicable solution to the vexed border issues and continue working towards maintaining peace and harmony along the inter-state border.

Addressing the media after the ministerial level meeting that was held in Aizawl today, Assam Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora said, “It is reaffirmed that the Goodwill Mission’ between the Government of Mizoram and the Government of Assam held on 9th August, 2024 at Aizawl, Mizoram is to take forward the firm commitment and initiative made in the meeting on 9th February, 2024 between the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam and the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram for resolution of the inter-State boundary dispute in an atmosphere of understanding and goodwill between the two States.”

“Both the States agreed to continue to promote and maintain peace and harmony and prevent any untoward incidents along the inter-State border”, the minister further said.

Minister Bora also said, “Deputy commissioners and Superintendents of Police will hold virtual meetings every month and meetings in person every six months to maintain and promote peace and harmony along inter-state border.”

Both the states agreed to organise joint cultural and sports festivals before January 31 next year.
The two states will continue with their policy of zero tolerance towards transportation of smuggled arecanut from other countries.

The meeting underscored the importance of cooperation of the people of both states living along the disputed borders for a peaceful solution and urged the people to being any difference on border issued to the appropriate authorities and not take law into their own hands.

It has been decided that all pending discussions and decisions to be made on the issue and other connected matters shall be taken up by officials of both the State Governments. This will be followed by a series of meetings to be held at venues decided by both officials.

The next ministerial level meeting will be held before March 31 next year, Minister Bora said.

The Mizoram side was led by Home Minister K Sapdnaga.

This was the first meeting after a gap of 21 months, the last meeting was held in November 2022. This was also the first meeting after Laduhoma became the Chief Minister of Mizoram.

Three meetings had taken place prior to today’s meeting.

The border dispute between the two states concerns three districts each on both sides, in Mizoram its Aizawl, Kolasib, and Mamit, which shares a 164.6 kilometer border with Assam’s Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts.
