Central and state forces have been deployed at the residence of senior Manipur Congress spokesperson and High Court lawyer Ningombam Bupenda Meitei after he sought government protection in the wake of social media rumours linking him to the leaked audio tape case allegedly involving former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
The rumours, which surfaced on Thursday, claimed that Bupenda was the counsel for the petitioner in a case pending before the Supreme Court seeking an investigation into the leaked audio clip. The speculation quickly spread across various social media platforms, raising serious concerns about his safety and prompting him to approach top state authorities.
In response, Bupenda Meitei submitted formal petitions to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, and Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, urging immediate security cover and action against the spread of misinformation. He said that “any form of rumour and fake news can potentially lead to mob violence” in a state already grappling with deep political and ethnic tensions.
“I have not signed any vakalatnama (legal document authorising a lawyer to represent a client) on behalf of either the petitioner or the respondent,” Bupenda clarified on Friday, firmly denying any involvement in the ongoing case being heard by the apex court.
Bupenda, who also serves as an executive panel member of the All India Congress Committee’s law department, alleged that certain individuals with vested interests were deliberately spreading false information to defame him and damage the image of the Congress party. “Such rumours have threatened my life and property,” he said, adding that malicious attempts are being made to create unrest by exploiting the sensitive situation in the state.
He urged the state machinery to “immediately curb the spread of rumours and fake news falsely linking my name in an unconnected case” and to take legal action against those responsible.
