Motivation and support can indeed do wonders and being more specific it can bring a whole lot of transformation individually as a human being. Such is the story of Chetna Sharma, a resident of Assam’s capital city Guwahati.
She has carved a niche by being tagged as the Strongest Woman Arm Wrestler of India, after an indeed challenging transition from a simple girl to an athlete, that requires extraordinary physical strength.
Presently in her mid-30s, Chetna was an eight-time best athlete in her school. She tried and excelled at long jump, high jump, and running before stumbling upon arm-wrestling in her early 20s when her then-close-friend-now-husband Nayanjyoti Bora, who has been into arm-wrestling since childhood, pushed her to give it a try.
Chetna spoke her heart out during an exlcusive conversation with Northeast Live and said about what fascinated her towards arm wrestling.
Initially Chetna began her career by losing her games but eventually her sheer grit and determination paved the way and she went to become 8 time National Armwrestling Gold medalist.
She said, “My whole family is into sports, my father is an athlete. Like in my maternal side, lots of my cousins are athletes. So sports is like something which is in my blood. I did not put any interest in that game but suddenly one day my husband said that you can also try and play arm wrestling. I said him no I can’t because I am short, my fist is very small, my fingers are short, I said him I cannot play arm wrestling. He said you just try once and see. That’s how I started playing arm wrestling. I lost games for like 2 and a half years and did not even win a single match. Slowly I started winning, I started enjoying it and now it has become a part of my life.”
Speaking about her recent achievement Chetna said, “Recently we had our National Championships in Nagpur, so there I won a Gold Medal with my left hand also and another Gold medal with my right hand also in the 65 kg Women’s senior category. Then I became a Champion of Champions also. That means it is a competition between all the Champions of each category. So there were 8 Champions in 8 categories (womens). I beat all of them and I became the overall Champion in India.”
But what makes Chetna so confident against her opponents.
In her reply, Chetna said, “While gripping we can say that we are going to win this match or lose this match or whether a particular is going to be easy for us or tough for us. So when I grip I feel like it is easy for me, so confidence comes naturally.”
