After boycotting the Lok Sabha elections, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) is firm on its decision to abstain from participating in the Urban Local Body elections on June 26.
The ENPO has said that its decision to boycott the polls has nothing to do with opposition to women’s reservation but is a mark of protest against the non-fulfillment of its Frontier Nagaland Territory demand.
Speaking to Northeast Live, ENPO President Tsapikiu Sangtam reiterated that the organization will stand by the Chenmoho resolution which is a public decision and needs to be upheld.
The state is gearing up for the historic Urban Local Body elections on June 26. The ULB election is extremely significant as the polls have been stalled in the state for the last 20 years.
The notification for holding of elections finally came last month after the Neiphiu Rio-led state cabinet paved way for the holding of the civic polls which had remained stalled for years due to the opposition to the reservation of 33% of the wards for women.
It may be mentioned that there are a total of 418 wards spread across 39 Municipality and Town Councils in Nagaland, out of which 142 wards are reserved for women. Only Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung have Municipal Councils while the rest are Town Councils.
The date for filing for nomination for the ULB polls is June 7th to 11th while the list of contesting candidates and list of polling stations will be posted on 20th June. The results of the elections will be declared on 28th June.
