Mizoram’s World War II veteran, Subedar Thanseia dies at 100, Defence Ministry releases eulogy

The Ministry of Defence had issued an eulogy on the death of Mizoram’s oldest World War II veteran Subedar Thanseia, who died of a heart attack at the age of 100 years.

The distinguished veteran breathed his last at Zoram Medical College on March 31 after being admitted to the ICU on March 24.

Born on July 13, 1923, Subedar Thanseia is well known for his valour at the Battle of Kohima during World War II as well as for his role in creating the 1st Assam Regiment’s legacy during their deployment at Jessami.

He was involved in all the six Battles of Honor won by the Assam Regiment on Jessami Day.

He joined the 1st Assam Battalion in December of 1941. He married Lalthanzami, who died on October 3, 2009. They have four sons.
After his wife’s death, he lived with his youngest son and grandchildren.

Thanseia retired from the Assam Regiment in 1969, with the rank of Subedar during World War II. After his retirement, Subedar Thanseia continued to inspire others by actively participating in military issues and educational programs.

In 1972, he was appointed as Tlangnuam Village Council President, a locality in Aizawl South.

He was always proud of his ability to fight for his country and nation, and he was one of the Indian troops who heroically fought and destroyed the Japanese soldiers who achieved great wins.
