Is Mizoram the site of a lost civilization? Well, archaeologists have found ancient rock carvings in four districts of Mizoram, revealing traces of a forgotten past.
The Archaeological Survey of India has discovered ancient rock carvings dating back to between the 16th and 19th centuries in Mizoram. The findings came during a village-to-village survey in February, across Champhai, Khawzawl, Saitual, and Serchhip districts.
In Maite village of Saitual district, a cliffside carving shows a striking human figure surrounded by smaller people, animals, gongs, and a row of mithun heads. The mithun a semi-domesticated bovine plays a strong cultural role in the region and features prominently in the artwork.
At Lianpui in Champhai district, the rock face displays human figures, animals, fish, spears, machetes called dao, hornbills, and rectangular chambers giving clues about ancient life, rituals, and possibly warfare.
In Tualte village of Khawzawl, archaeologists recorded mithun heads, human forms, and unique grooved lines. And at nearby Chhawrtu, carvings included rows of human heads, circular figures with tendrils, and fish motifs all carefully etched into the stone.
