A bear escaped from the cage of the Aizawl Zoological Park in Mizoram yesterday.

Director of Aizawl Zoological Park, PC Laltanpuia said that the bear escaped after an uprooted tree fell inside the bear cage helping one of the bears climb up the fallen tree trunk and escape. The tree was uprooted after being hit by the strong gusty winds that had lashed several parts of Mizoram in the past couple of days.

The zoo has borrowed a tranquilizer gun and traps from the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Selesih to catch the bear.

Officials believe that the escaped bear is still in the Zoological Park, and the search for it is going on, with staff constantly manning the traps.

Officials have also issued an order for the closure of the Zoological Park today.
