NEDA convenor and Assam Finance, Health, Education and Tourism Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s rises in the national political arena. The firebrand Minister, credited to have installed BJP-led governments in six northeastern States, has been ranked 10th most powerful among Indian politicians according to a report by ‘India Today’.

In a survey on the most powerful political leaders in India titled “Political Top 10: The supremos”, the NEDA Convenor pipped a number of top political leaders.

Tagging the Assam minister as “Eastern Promise”, ‘India Today’ claimed “Himanta Biswa Sarma has almost single-handedly ensured BJP rule in six of seven Northeastern states”, adding that he was chosen “because for any Northeast-related issue, his word is final for the prime minister and BJP president and because the Assam finance minister played able deputy to Union finance minister Arun Jaitley in convincing state Finance Ministers to come on board for GST”.

Incidentally, Himanta Biswa Sarma was ranked 27th in the list of hundred most influential Indians by the Indian Express group earlier in March this year.
