In a proud moment for the nation, weightlifter Bindyarani Devi from Manipur won the silver medal in the women’s 55 kg event at the Asian Championships on May 6.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) took to Twitter to congratulate her, posting, “It’s silver for @BindyaraniS at the #Weightlifting🏋️ Senior Asian Chps 2023 🥳. The Commonwealth Games🥈Medalist & #TOPSchemeAthlete lifted 83kg in Snatch & 111kg in Clean & Jerk in the Women’s 55kg category. With a total lift of 194 kg 💪, she secured 🇮🇳’s 1⃣st Medal at the event. Congratulations 🇮🇳👏.”
The 24-year-old weightlifter Bindyarani Devi, who had previously won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, participated in the non-Olympic 55kg category at the Asian Championships. Despite sustaining an injury before the selection trials, she took the decision to compete in her original weight division of 55 kg.
She executed a snatch lift of 83kg and a clean & jerk lift of 111kg, culminating in a total effort of 194kg.
