Torch relay for Meghalaya Games kicked off in Shillong today

The Sports Minister said that this was the biggest Meghalaya games with over 3000 athletes participating in the games and more 23 disciplines.

Meghalaya Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri flagged off the torch relay for the 5th Meghalaya Games from Shillong’s SSA Stadium to Tura in West Garo Hills, where the event is scheduled from January 15 to January 20.

Speaking on the occasion Warjri said that the government and the sports department has worked really hard to ensure a successful edition of Meghalaya Games this year and that it is one of the best Meghalaya games.

The Sports Minister said that this was the biggest Meghalaya games with over 3000 athletes participating in the games and more 23 disciplines.

Warjri said that through this Meghalaya Games and the platform that they are providing the athletes one the athletes will be able to represent and participate in national games and even the Olympics.

He also spoke about the Super Elite Programme launched last year for athlete development and bring out Olympians from the state.

He said that it will give great pride to see that the youths of our state can even participate at the Olympics that is our goal and aim. And we believe with the dedication and hard work of the entire team we believe we can achieve this.

The government is working hard to give the youth a platform to encourage them to achieve great height through sports. And that the youths of our state don’t just look at sports as a hobby but something that they can earn from it.

He further added that many youths of our state have fallen into drug addiction which has become a menace in our state. We believe through sprits the youth of our state will not get into drugs.
