Split Wide Open in Assam’s Oppn Alliance: Will it be Cong Vs Alliance Candidate in the Behali Seat?

First Published: 23rd October, 2024 18:44 IST

Time is running out as October 25 is the last date to file nominations for the bypolls to be held on November 13.

The fight over the candidate for the Behali seat has left the split in the Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM) or the opposition alliance forum in Assam wide open. Within hours of Assam Congress chief Bhupen Bora resigning as the president of the Morcha, one of the alliance partners, Asom Jatiya Parishad said that if Congress fields its own candidate in the Behali seat then AJP along with the other alliance partners – AAP, Left Parties and Raijor Dal will field their own candidate against the Congress candidate.

“It was already decided that we as the opposition alliance will field CPI-ML candidate for the Behali seat. Congress had agreed to this. But yesterday night congress said they want to change the candidate. If Congress announces its candidate then we, the remaining alliance partners will decide our candidate,” AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi told Northeast Live.

“We are in favour of unity of the alliance and for the people of Assam. Opposition vote should not be divided. We have to stay united. Not much time is left for 2026 (Assam Assembly polls). Elections is a united effort. The ruling party too has left seats for its allies,” Gogoi said.

Congress has already announced Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha for the Dholai seat, Sanjib Warle for Sidli seat, Brajenjit Sinha for Bongaigaon seat and Tanzil Hussain, son of Assam Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP, for the Samaguri seat.

Earlier in the day, Bhupen Bora resigned as the president of the alliance citing “tremendous pressure” and inability to enforce decision making it evident that the opposition alliance has almost collapsed.
