With the arrival of the picnic season, the Assam Police has issued a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for citizens to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The guidelines, focusing on road safety and public order, aim to minimize accidents and ensure adherence to these rules during outdoor gatherings.
Authorities have urged the public to follow some Do’s and Don’ts to reduce risks while travelling to and from picnic spots:
Do’s:
- Picnic-goers are urged to prioritize safety by designating a sober driver for the trip, ensuring their vehicles are in good condition, and using only legally compliant passenger vehicles like private cars or buses.
- Passengers must wear seat belts, and motorcyclists should wear helmets to avoid injury.
- Drivers are advised to follow traffic rules and park only in designated areas near picnic spots.
- To be prepared for emergencies, travellers are asked to carry essentials such as a first-aid kit, water, and repair tools. Additionally, all picnic groups are requested to inform the local police station about their travel plans, including the origin and destination of their journey.
- Picnic-goers are asked to save emergency helpline numbers, such as 112 for police assistance and 108 for medical emergencies, for quick access in case of emergencies. Additionally, district-specific helpline numbers will be provided by local authorities to ensure a safe and worry-free outing for everyone.
Don’ts:
- To ensure a safe picnic experience, picnic-goers are advised not to overspeed, particularly on hilly or narrow roads leading to picnic spots.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited as it can lead to severe consequences.
- Another key safety measure is to avoid overcrowding vehicles, as exceeding seating capacity significantly increases the risk of accidents.
- Travelers are requested to use only passenger vehicles like private cars or buses, which are designed with safety in mind.
- Travelers are requested to avoid playing loud music while driving as they can impair a driver’s focus and reaction time.
- Lastly, travellers are advised to be cautious about weather conditions and asked to start their journey after sunrise and plan to return before sunset to ensure they avoid adverse weather and ensure good visibility throughout their trip.
