HM Amit Shah Inaugurates and Lays Foundation for Rs 668.39 Cr Development Projects in Tripura, Highlights Reang Tribal Resettlement

The Reang tribals, displaced from Mizoram in 1997 due to ethnic conflicts, lived in camps across Tripura for over two decades.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for at least 13 development projects worth Rs 668.39 crore in Tripura and emphasized the progress and peace achieved under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Among the 13 projects are:
1. Sewage Treatment Plants (Rs 25.86 crore) under the Agartala Smart City Scheme.
2. Central Detective Training Institute (Rs 120 crore) under the Bureau of Police Research & Development.
3. Upgradation of Major Roads in Agartala with Underground Utilities (Rs 318 crore).
4. New Sub-Divisional Magistrate Office in Ambassa (Rs 12.50 crore).
5. Various Health Centres across the state.

Earlier in the day the Union Home Minister visited the Reang tribal settlement camps.

Addressing a gathering at Kulai RF Village Ground in Dhalai district, Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the resolution of the 25-year-old Reang tribal displacement issue, which had left thousands of tribals without stable living conditions for decades.

He criticized the previous Left Front government for neglecting the Reang tribals and other communities, asserting that the BJP government has prioritized their welfare. He announced that Rs 900 crore was spent to settle approximately 40,000 Reang tribals across 11 locations in Tripura, ensuring access to basic facilities such as education, healthcare, water supply, electricity, and road connectivity.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “For the last 25 years, the Bru-Reang refugees were living in conditions worse than animals, deprived of basic necessities such as clean drinking water, electricity, toilets, primary education, jobs, and healthcare. Despite ruling for so long, the Left Front government failed to address their plight. However, after the BJP came to power in Tripura and Biplab Kumar Deb became Chief Minister, we ensured the resettlement of around 40,000 Bru-Reang tribals across 11 locations in Tripura, providing them with all basic facilities.”

He further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought peace to the state.

The Reang tribals, displaced from Mizoram in 1997 due to ethnic conflicts, lived in camps across Tripura for over two decades.

In January 2020, a quadripartite agreement was signed between the Centre, Tripura and Mizoram governments, and Reang tribal leaders to resettle 37,136 tribal immigrants (6,302 families) in 12 locations across four districts-North Tripura, Dhalai, Gomati, and South Tripura.

The settlement has transformed the lives of the displaced Reang tribals, offering them stability and access to vital resources after years of uncertainty.
