Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks and Nagaland Governor RN Ravi has taken exception to the NSCN-IM’s recent statement that the outfit has the right to collect tax from the people

Interlocutor for Naga Peace Talks and Nagaland Governor RN Ravi has taken exception to the NSCN-IM’s recent statement that the outfit has the right to collect tax from the people and that their right has been recognised also by the representatives of the Government of India having dialogue with them.

The release issued by RN Ravi’s office added that such an erroneous statement on the part of the outfit is likely to cause confusion among the people as taxation is a sovereign function which can be exercised only either by the Centre or the state government.

The government of India does not recognise any such right by any other entity, the statement said adding that forcible collection of money by any entity is extortion and punishable under the law.

The statement added that all the Naga armed organisations engaged in the peace talks have given a commitment against such collection.

It may be mentioned that the NSCN-IM in a recent statement that collection of taxes by the GRPN is legitimate and even representatives of Government of India engaged in political dialogue with NSCN leaders recognise the right.
